About UpFuel
Straight answers about burning fuel indoors — with the numbers, the conditions attached to them, and no pretending the difficult parts are simple.
Search for something like "is a kerosene heater safe indoors" and you get two kinds of page. Retailer copy that says yes, and safety pages that say no. Neither helps, because the honest answer is conditional — and the conditions are specific, numeric, and mostly written down in appliance manuals that nobody opens.
That gap is why UpFuel exists. We cover one subject properly: fuel burned inside buildings. Kerosene wick heaters, indoor-rated propane radiants, flueless gas fires, solid fuel, and the ventilation, carbon monoxide and cost arithmetic that goes with all of them.
What we actually do
We state the conditions. Ventilation openings in square inches. Sulphur limits by fuel grade. Alarm response curves in ppm and minutes. Cost per usable kilowatt-hour, with the arithmetic shown so you can redo it at your own prices instead of trusting ours.
Every guide is built the same way:
- A short answer first, in three lines, at the top — because most people came with one question and deserve it answered before anything else.
- Sources you can check. Figures trace to appliance standards, manufacturer instructions or named safety authorities, listed at the foot of every guide with links.
- Graphics that carry information, not stock photos of a cosy fire.
- Dates that mean something. Published and last-updated, and we revise in place rather than republishing.
What we will not do
We will not publish workarounds for safety devices. We will not tell you an outdoor heater is fine indoors "if you're careful". We will not pretend an unvented appliance has no air-quality cost. And we take no payment for coverage — when the answer is "that appliance does not belong in that room", we say so, and an advertisement next to a guide is never a recommendation.
Corrections are welcome
We would rather be corrected than consistent. If a figure here is wrong, out of date, or missing the conditions attached to it, tell us and we will fix it and say so on the page. The full process is in our editorial policy.
How this stays free
The site is supported by advertising. That covers hosting and lets the library keep growing without charging readers or taking money from manufacturers for favourable treatment. Ads are kept clearly separate from the guides.
