Natural gas is the cleanest of the three fossil fuels and the most tightly regulated in domestic use, which makes this the section where the rules matter most. Mains gas produces roughly half the carbon dioxide of coal per unit of energy, leaves no ash, and contains virtually no sulphur — but it is still combustion, and where it happens without a flue the conditions are strict.
The flueless gas fire is the interesting case. It is legal in much of the UK and US because a catalytic converter and an oxygen depletion sensor push combustion close to complete and shut the appliance down before conditions degrade. It is banned outright in Canada and restricted in several US states and cities. Where it is permitted, it depends on a permanent, non-closable air vent — and boarding over that vent, because it whistles and lets cold air in, is the single most common fault found on service calls.
